Get Dressed Half-Asleep with Me
who has time for a full GRWM every morning?
The secret isn’t more clothes. It’s the right few, which is why I founded Select Vintage. Pieces chosen so carefully that they all give the same elevated feel and work together: each one of them goes together, every one of them stands on its own, you can think about getting dressed after an alarm snooze and before coffee. Mix them, layer them, swap them — there’s no wrong combination. That’s the point!
I am sure you have all heard of the “uniform” concept of getting dressed. I am not a fan of the uniform because my mood changes daily, but I do think it’s important to have strong essentials in your rotation so you can toss on more exciting pieces when you are in the mood or keep it simple to grab-and-go. Some mornings, you just want to reach into the closet, grab something, and trust that it’s going to work.
That’s the whole idea behind my “get dressed half-asleep” concept. Honestly, it’s how I get dressed most mornings. Running a business in NYC is not for the weak. I don’t have a window to look through my closet and decide what matches. I have just enough time to grab my favorites, toss them on, and go. This formula lets you do the same: wake up, throw something on post-alarm snooze, and still look like you planned it.
1. The Oversized Button-Up (yes, I will say this again.)
This is the hardest-working piece in my whole closet. I wear it open over the lace tank with the linen trousers, tucked loosely into a slip skirt, or buttoned and belted as a dress all on its own. It’s usually the first thing I grab. The half-asleep outfit: sleeves pushed up, one side tucked, the gold earrings, the leather bag. Done in ninety seconds so you aren’t late to your morning meeting or weekend brunch.
2. The Lightweight Oversized Blazer
This is my instant polish. I throw it over almost anything else on this list and it takes the outfit from “I rolled out of bed” to “I have somewhere to be”. The lightweight fabric means it travels and layers without ever feeling heavy, and the relaxed shoulder keeps it soft rather than stiff. The half-asleep outfit:blazer over the black lace tank with the white linen trousers, hair in clip. Effortless and very chic.
3. The Black Lace Tank
The elevated tank. On its own it’s a little bit of evening hiding inside a daytime outfit; layered, it adds texture under the button-up or peeks out from beneath the blazer. It’s black, so it goes with everything, and it’s lace, so it never feels basic. I reach for it more than almost anything else I own. The half-asleep outfit: tank, linen trousers, gold earrings and you’re ready for almost anywhere, even the airport.
4. The White Linen Trouser
This is the piece that makes my whole capsule feel light and expensive. White linen looks beautiful, breathes through any season, and pairs with every other item here. The relaxed leg gives me comfort that still looks deliberate — it’s the rare trouser I can pull on half-awake and still feel polished in. The half-asleep outfit:trousers, button-up tucked in, blazer over the top, vintage bag.
5. The Lace Slip Skirt
My favorite day to night hack with a little ballet flat or kitten heel. The slip silhouette dresses up or down without any effort from me: tank and bare shoulders for warm days, button-up layered over for cooler ones, blazer on top when I need to look like I tried. Cashmere is great with this too. The lace detail does the styling so I don’t have to. The half-asleep outfit: slip skirt, lace tank, gold earrings, Chanel flat.
6. The Black Leather Bag
The piece that ties any outfit together without a second thought. I recommend a non-logo bag for this one. Vintage leather only gets better with wear, I swear people will stop to ask you about it. I prefer a hobo or structured with minimal hardware accents. Think the Row or Totem vibe.
7. The Classic Gold Vintage Earring
Wear with ANYTHING and you will feel put together, even with sweats. I even keep in my bag at all times 2-3 vintage earrings incase I need to change my look. A clip on for bonus points. A pair of classic gold earrings is the smallest piece on this list and, to me, the most powerful: they make you seem brighter, frame your face, and signal put-together even on the days you absolutely are not. The half-asleep move: whatever else you’re wearing, add these, I promise you will feel better.
The Math of Seven!
Seven pieces that all work together don’t give you seven outfits — they give you dozens. Button-up over the slip skirt is one look. Blazer over the lace tank and trousers is another. Tank and skirt for warm days, all four layered for cool ones, the bag and earrings carrying every single different look.
You don’t need a full closet. You need pieces that have been chosen for each other — that’s the difference between a wardrobe that exhausts you and one that catches you on the mornings you can’t quite catch yourself. It’s the difference I built my whole collection around.

I absolutely adore this tactic. Sometimes, I don’t even feel like dressing up, but putting together those pieces literally makes me feel better 🤗
